Welcome to the first of what will hopefully be a regular and informative newsletter for our clients.
So how is it done? Simply if you think about the likely two or three work phrases that someone would use to find your website - these are your keywords (phrases). Type them into Google and see which website gets a top ranking. This is your main competitor for that keyword phrase.
Visit your main competitor’s home page and then use the menu ‘view/source’ in Internet Explorer to see how their webpage is constructed. Their keywords should be clearly placed near the top of the page. Get some ideas of suitable keywords from your competitor.
When defining your keywords be mindful that you are but a ‘small fish in a big pond’ and often it will be to your benefit to use keyword phrases that are geographical e.g. buckinghamshire widgets rather than just widgets. Try to limit your keywords to about 25 words and only use those that are within your page text.
The second tag to consider is the description tag. The content of this tag is often displayed in the search engine result immediately following your page title. Again you can get ideas for yours from your main competitor. The text is essentially your ‘call to action’ – the bit that potential visitors will see first and it should encourage them to click on your listing to learn more. So include plenty of those keywords! The description meta tag should be no more than a couple of sentences or 120 words.
Not getting enough visitors to your website? Reciprocal links are absolutely vital for good search engine placement but they are perhaps the most time consuming activity any website owner can embark on. Enthusiasm can quickly wane when your 100 emails requesting links result in only one reply. It is easy to be tempted by the quick fix of link farms and directories – a practice frowned upon by many search engines which could lead to your site being removed altogether.
But help is now at hand because we are able to automate your reciprocal linking with a system which takes out the hard work for you yet is still search engine friendly.
The system searches out potential linking partners either by using your keywords to find those that rank well for them (i.e. your competitors) or by finding those sites that link to your competitors – sites that should be amenable to linking to you as well.
Once you’ve short listed suitable link partners the system can email your link request and send out follow up reminders. Those that agree to link to you are added to your link page (complete with search facility) and are regularly checked so that if they remove your link from their website you’re notified and they are reminded to put it back.
